Paper I
Introduction to Socio-Cultural Anthropology


Unit I 
Anthropology and its branches; Meaning and scope of Social-Cultural Anthropology and its relationship with other social sciences (esp: Sociology and History). Basic Concepts: Ethnicity, Diaspora, civil society, social exclusion, Caste and class. Status and Role. 

Unit II 
Definition, types and forms of marriage. Marriage payments: Dowry and bride wealth. Rules and regulations (Prohibition, preferential, exogamy, endogamy, levirate and sororate). The natural history and universality of family. Types of family. Joint family system in India. 

Unit III 
Kinship terms and usages. Descriptive and classificatory systems, Morgan’s and Murdock’s view, Avoidance and joking relationship. Patterns of residence and descent. Kin groups- lineage, clan, Phratry, moiety. Meaning and Scope of Economic Anthropology. Distinction between Formalist and Substantives Approach. Modes of exchange in primitive society. 

Unit IV
Social Order in stateless political systems, State and its formation. Anthropology and the study of law. Theories of origin of religion – Animism, Animatism, Naturism etc. Thoughts on magic, religion and science. Totemism and Taboo
